Description:
An
introductory course to working on a lathe by way of spindle turning. That is
turning between centers. You will learn and experience the correct way to set
up your wood for turning and appropriate tools to use to produce you first
turned project.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:

Parts and Operation of wood lathes, noting
differences across models.
·
Simple maintenance and cleaning of lathes and
accessories.
·
How to sharpen the roughing gouge, parting tool,
scrapers and the spindle gouge.
·
Selection and preparation of stock for spindle
turning.
·
Mounting stock between centers, on a chuck and in a
collet.
·
How to make beads and coves using a scraper and the
spindle gouge.
·
Basic finishes to be applied on and off the lathe.
Machines and tools to be used:
A variety of machines will be used to prepare stock, including the table
saw, band saw, power miter-box and drill press. The proper use of chucks,
collets and sharpening wheels will also be demonstrated during the course.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Steps will be
demonstrated by the instructor and students will follow suit, with assistance
being provided as needed. Various small projects and tasks will serve to
provide practice in the development of turning skills.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
introductory course and as such requires only prior participation of the
Workshop Certification Course required by all new VWC members. However, it is
expected that participants are competent in the use of shop machinery mentioned
above to prepare stock for the actual lathe work.
Project/product to be made:
A variety of
small projects can be considered, each of which will lend themselves to the
development and practice of spindle turning skills. These can include spinning
tops, weed pots (bud vases), ball catchers and bottle stoppers.
Duration of course:
Five, two-hour
sessions taken over 5 consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will
be an additional charge for materials of $20 to cover the cost of stock,
finishing materials and tool use and replacement.
