Chuck Heise
Course
Description:
An
introductory course for beginning skill level participants into the mechanics
of joinery.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:
·
What is meant by the “mechanics of joinery”.
·
Correct preparation of material to be used.
·
Safe use of table saw, planer and jointer machines
where applicable.

Correct use and application of glues.
·
Box and Dovetail joints: their usages, strengths and
limitations.
Machines and tools to be used:
Emphasis for the course will be on the power tools found and used in the
workshop.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will receive
demonstrations of how various joints are constructed, tools are correctly used,
their safe practice usage and any unusual, (though still safe), ways that they
may be employed to broaden their versatility. The demonstrations will be
followed by participants having time to practice making one of each joint using
the tools themselves to complete each exercise.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
introductory course and as such requires no prior experience beyond the VWC
orientation class. A desire to become more familiar with joinery would of
course be a great asset.
Project/product to be made:
No specific
product will be made other than the practice joints.
Duration of course:
Five, three-hour
sessions taken over consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There may be
an additional charge of approximately $10 to cover the costs of materials used
during the course to be determined by the instructor.
Before
signing up for any of the VWC courses, would you please try to check with your
calendar to make sure that you will be free and able to attend for all of the
sessions for that class and not just some of them. Many Thanks.
