Description:
An
introductory course to the fundamentals of woodworking through the construction
and completion of a basic project.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:

Participants will learn the safe operation of a
variety of woodworking tools and equipment.
·
Correct preparation of material to be used.
·
How to accurately measure and calculate the
dimensions of the pieces for a small project.
·
Assembly procedures for pieces of the project so as
to follow a logical sequence.
Machines and tools to be used:
Emphasis for the course will be on the power tools found and used in the
workshop. These will include the table saw; band saw; chop saw; jointer; planer
and drill press. In addition there may be use of a hand held drill, sander or
router.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will engage
in various cutting and preparation techniques to complete the construction of a
small project. Demonstration and assistance will be available throughout to
ensure that students acquire the most from their experiences.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
introductory course and as such requires no prior experience beyond the VWC
orientation class. However, participants should ideally posses a rudimentary
understanding of the intended purposes of basic woodworking machines and
equipment as well as the principles of shop safety as demonstrated by their
successful completion of the Certification Program.
Project/product to be made:
Students in
the course will construct a bi-plane shelf although some variation from the
main theme may be considered if appropriate.
Duration of course:
Five, three-hour
sessions taken over consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will
be an additional charge to cover the materials used during the course based
upon actual costs.
