COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:  Basic Spindle Turning

Course Number : 101

Instructors : Ron Gammon, Larry Cross, Robert Ridgard, John Herega, Herb Faust, et. al..

 

Course Description: 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.

1.     Parts and operation of wood lathes (noting differences across models).

2.     Simple maintenance and cleaning of lathes and accessories

3.     How to sharpen the roughing gouge, parting tool, scrapers, and the spindle gouge.

4.     Selecting and preparing stock for spindle turning.

5.     Mounting stock between centers, on a chuck, and in a collet.

6.     How to make beads and coves with scrapers and the spindle gouge.

7.     Basic finishes to be applied on and off the lathe.

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.

A variety of machines will be used to prepare stock, including the table saw, band saw, power miter-box, and drill press.  Proper use of chucks, collets, and sharpening wheels also will be demonstrated.

 

·        Learning process/procedure. The learning process basically will be hands-on. Each step of the process will be demonstrated by the instructor and participants will follow suit with assistance provided as needed.  Various small projects will serve to provide practice in developing turning skills. 

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. This is an introductory course and as such the only requirement is participation in the “certification” clinic required of all new VWC members.  However, it is expected that participants are competent in use of the machines mentioned above to prepare stock for turning.

 

·        Project/product to be made. Projects will include: spinning tops, weed pots (bud vases), ball catchers, and bottle tops.

 

·        Duration of course.   Three, two-hour classes
