COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:  Basic Bowl Turning

Course Number : 102

Instructors : Ron Gammon, Larry Cross, Robert Ridgard, John Herega, Herb Faust, et. al..

 

Course Description: 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.

1.     Parts and operation of wood lathes (noting difference across models)

2.     Simple maintenance and cleaning of lathes and accessories.

3.     How to sharpen the deep-fluted bowl gouge and round-nose scrappers.

4.     Selecting and preparing stock for bowl turning.

5.     How to use straight cuts on a band saw to shape a bowl blank

6.     Mounting stock on face plates and chucks.

7.     How to shape a bowl using shear cuts and bevel cuts with a deep-fluted bowl gouge will be emphasized.  How to use scrappers to make finish cuts as needed.

8.     Design considerations and finishing will also be addressed.

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.

The different models of lathes and turning tools available in the shop as well as proper use of the table saw, band saw, and power miterbox saw for preparing the stock.

 

·        Learning process/procedure. The learning process basically will be hands-on. Each step of the process will be demonstrated by the instructor and the students will follow suit with assistance provided as needed. 

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. This is an introductory course and as such the only requirement is participation in the orientation clinic required of all new VWC members. However, it is expected that participants are competent in use of the machines mentioned above to prepare stock for turning.

 

 

·        Project/product to be made. One or more shallow bowls

 

·        Duration of course.   Three, two-hour classes
