COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title: Basic Pen and Pencil Making (Regular)

Course Description:

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.   Participants will learn how to design and produce a small, lathe-turned object in the form of a ballpoint pen.  Participants will learn about various types of pens and the availability of suppliers and resources.  They will learn how to select appropriate wood and prepare it for turning.  Finally, they will turn, finish and assemble a pen.

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.   A prepared blank may be provided.  Participants will mount it in a lathe using a mandrel (mounting device) and turn the pen body using appropriate lathe turning tools.  A band saw and drill press may be used in preparing the stock.

 

·        Learning process/procedure.  The process will be presented and demonstrated by the teacher and then participants will produce a unique pen employing the demonstrated skills.

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation.  Intermediate lathe turning skills are required.  Course #101 (Basic Spindle Turning) is available for those who may need additional preparation.

 

·        Project/product to be made.   Each participant will make a slim line (regular) ballpoint pen.

 

·        Duration of course.  Two 2-hour sessions.

 

·        Cost of materials beyond $10 fee.  There may be costs for materials beyond the fee depending upon availability of appropriate wood.
