Course Description:

· Skills and knowledge to be gained. Participants will be shown the basics of chip carving. This includes correct use of the special chip carving knife to produce interesting geometric and free-form patterns on wood surfaces.

Machines and tools to be used. One chip carving knife supplied by The Woodshop will be used in the class.

Learning process/procedure. The instructor will demonstrate the proper application of a paper pattern onto a basswood blank and the correct way to use a chip carving knife. Participants will then carve the pattern into the wood, with support of the instructor as necessary.

· Prerequisite skills: What level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. Some knowledge of wood carving would be helpful so that participants appreciate how sharp wood carving knives are and how to use them safely. Beyond that, no specific wood carving or other woodworking experience is necessary.

· Project/product to be made. Sample carving board.

Duration of course. Classes will be held for two hours on each of three days.

Cost of materials beyond $10 fee. There is no additional cost. A basswood blank will be supplied to each student for use in the class. The Woodshop will supply each participant with a chip carving knife for use in the class and they may subsequently buy that knife at cost.
