Title: Advanced Caricature
Carving and Design

Description:
- Skills and knowledge to
be gained. Each participant will be taught various carving
techniques used in “caricaturing” the human face. This will begin the
building of a library of methods that participants may
develop over the duration of their carving careers. In addition modeling
in clay and development of a set of successful carving plans will be
presented.
- Machines and tools to
be used. One chip carving knife supplied by The
Woodshop will be used in the class.
- Learning
process/procedure. The instructor will
demonstrate the proper application of a paper pattern onto a basswood
blank and the correct way to use a chip carving knife. The student will then carve the pattern
into the wood, with support of the instructor as necessary.
- Prerequisite skills;
what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful
participation. Participants should have
completed several carvings within the last year and are asked to
demonstrate their current level of competence. Participant ability to sharpen their own
knives is mandatory, as time will not be spent
teaching this skill.
- Project/product to be
made.

A caricature of the participant’s own design.
- Duration of course.
6- 8 weeks, depending on the time required
to complete a project. The instructor provides this open window to ensure
participant success.
