Course
Title: Basic Jointer, Thickness
Planer and
Surface Sander Operation
Course
No. 304
Instructor: TBN
·
Skills and knowledge to be gained. Fundamental understanding of the jointer,
thickness planer and surface sanders and how to use them to safely perform the
operations for preparing solid wood for further use.
·
Machines and tools to be used. Jointer, thickness planer and surface sanders
as well as table saw and glue clamps, depending on time availability.
·
Learning process/procedure. Participants
will be given an overview of the jointer, thickness planer and surface sanders
covering their roles in wood preparation. Explanations will be given of the
various adjustment wheels and levers. However, participants will not be
permitted to make any adjustments to the existing settings of the jointer
in-feed and out-feed tables. After a demonstration, and under the instructor’s
supervision, the participants will perform all the operations to joint a face
and edge of a rough piece of wood, following which they will then utilize the
planer to bring both faces of the stock into parallel, followed by sanding
appropriate surfaces. Participants will
then rip the stock to a common width. If time permits, participants will rip
the stock into two or more pieces, joint each of the cut edges and then glue
these pieces back together to create a laminated piece.
