COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:      Project Planning

Course No:                 401

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained:  Knowledge of how to plan a project; how to prepare a Bill of Materials and estimate cost and complexity; and, how to lay out the pieces of the project on the wood ready for construction. 

·        Machines and tools to be used: Miter saw, jointer and planer plus hand tools such as a straight edge, steel rule, tape measure, combination square, compass, trammel paper with squares.

·        Learning process/procedure:  The instructor will teach you: how to create the plans for your project; how to estimate what you will need; and, how to lay out the pieces on the wood.  Machine use will be limited to dressing and squaring the stock with the jointer and planer and cutting the pieces to length using the miter saw.

·        Prerequisite skills:  None; this is primarily a classroom exercise although familiarity with the machinery noted would be useful.

·        Project/product to be made:  None; construction of your project will be left to other classes. (However, participants should come with some idea of what they might like to attempt but not with a specific project for which a Bill of Materials already exists as this will save time.)

·        Duration of course:  One session of 3 hours.
