COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title: Basic Woodworking

Course Number :  501

Course Description:  Introduction to fundamental woodworking through the building of a wooden project which involves the use of  tools, operations, techniques and shop safety by using various stationary and hand-held woodworking tools.

 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained. Participants will learn how to safely operate a variety of woodworking equipment and tools; how to prepare wood for further use; how to measure and calculate the dimensions of the pieces of a wooden project and how to assemble those pieces in a logical manner.

·        Machines and tools to be used. This course will employ the table saw, chop saw, band saw, jointer, planer and drill press, plus a variety of hand-held tools, such as a drill, sander or router.

·        Learning process/procedure. Participants will engage in various wood cutting and preparation activities through hands-on participation and use of the tools required.

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. Participants should possess a rudimentary understanding of the intended purposes of basic woodworking equipment and the principles of shop safety as demonstrated by their successful completion of the Certification Program.

·        Project/product to be made. During this course, participants will construct a bi-plane shelf (some variation from the main theme design may be considered.

·        Duration of course. This course will run for 4 weeks in 3-hour sessions starting at 4:00 P.M.

·        Cost of materials beyond $10 fee.  To be determined based on actual costs.
