COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:  Cabinet Construction (Intermediate)

Course Number : 601

Instructor : Bob Klinger

 

Course Description:  Participants will build a simple cabinet, starting with a sheet of plywood and ending with a finished cabinet.  Safe usage of the shop machines and procedures will be emphasized.  Participants will need a drawing of the cabinet they select so that materials can be ordered to suit.  Cabinets with a drawer will require an extra session.

 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.

o       Cut materials to size—check for squareness.

o       Machine rabbet joints for floor, back and shelves.

o       Assemble using glue, screw blocks and screws.

o       Build a face frame and door(s) (if applicable).

o       Fabricate a drawer (if applicable).

o       Prepare surfaces and apply stain and/or top-coat finish.

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.  The table saw will be used by all participants and the jointer and planer may be utilized when raw wood is involved.  The router table with various cutters may be employed.  A hand-held power drill and/or sander may be used.

 

·        Learning process/procedure. Participants may make a cabinet of their choosing.  A drawing is necessary so that participants can describe and dimension the materials they will need to order.  Materials will be cut to size and appropriate joinery machined into parts.  Components will be assembled into a finished cabinet using glue and appropriate fasteners and hardware.  The project will be finished using an appropriate process and material.

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation.  Intermediate–level familiarity with the jointer, planer, table saw, drill press cut-off saw, router/shaper, and sander.  Prerequisite Course #301 (The Mechanics of Joinery).

 

·        Project/product to be made.   Participants may make a bookcase, base cabinet, wall cabinet, curio cabinet, etc. of their choosing.

 

·        Duration of course. 5 weeks, 2 ˝ hours per week.

 

·        Cost of materials beyond $10 fee. Cost of wood in excess of fee plus hardware.  (Participants may be able to share costs in ordering materials such as a sheet of plywood.)
