Title: Intarsia—Art With Wood (Beginning)

Course
Description: During this course, you will
form parts and assemble a dolphin composed of a variety of woods selected
according to type of wood, its color and its grain pattern.

Skills and knowledge to be gained. You will learn how to:
o Identify various woods by
recognizing their colors and grain patterns.
o Cut intricate shapes
following traced patterns using a scroll saw.
o Operate a special sander mounted in a drill
press.
o Assemble formed parts.
o Apply a gel varnish finish.

Machines and tools to be used. The
scroll saw and drill press.
·
Learning process/procedure. This class
will begin by familiarizing you with the color and grain patterns of various
woods. Pattern parts will be traced onto
selected woods and the intricate parts will be cut out and sanded to size. Parts will be assembled to form a dolphin and
the project will be finished with a gel varnish.
·
Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for
safe, successful participation. Ability to cut intricate shapes on the scroll saw.
·
Project/product to be made. A dolphin.
·
Duration of course. The course will have 3 weekly sessions of 3 hours
each.
