COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:  Intarsia—Art With Wood (Intermediate)

Course Number :  802

Instructor: Cora Vennes

Course Description:  During this course, you will form parts and assemble a St. Augustine Lighthouse composed of a variety of woods selected according to type of wood, color and grain.   (This project is more complicated that the beginning Intarsia dolphin.)

 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.  You will learn how to:

o       Identify various woods by recognizing their colors and grain patterns.

o       Cut intricate shapes of traced patterns using a scroll saw.

o        Operate a special sander mounted in a drill press.

o       Assemble formed parts.

o       Apply a gel varnish finish.

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.  The scroll saw and drill press. 

 

·        Learning process/procedure.  This class will begin by familiarizing you with the color and grain patterns of various woods.  Pattern parts will be traced onto selected woods and the intricate parts will be cut out and sanded to size.  Parts will be assembled to form a St. Augustine Lighthouse and the project will be finished with a gel varnish.

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. Participants must have completed Beginning Intarsia.

 

·        Project/product to be made.  St. Augustine Lighthouse

 

·        Duration of course. The course will have 3 weekly sessions of 3 hours each.
