COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title: Build a Musical Instrument

Course Description: 

·        Skills and knowledge to be gained.  The purpose of the class will be to learn the basic concepts of building fretted musical instruments. 

 

·        Machines and tools to be used.  Woodworking skills requirements are relatively basic and may involve the use of the table saw, jointer, surface planer, band saw and/or scroll saw.

 

·        Learning process/procedure. The instructor will demonstrate skills and then participants will employ those skills in making a complete musical instrument.

 

·        Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation. Certification level woodworking skills plus enthusiasm to learn and commitment to stick with it. 

 

·        Project/product to be made. The end result will be to have built a three-stringed “A” Stick with frets.  The “A” Stick is a cousin of the dulcimer, but it is played like a guitar.  Makes a fun instrument to play around with and would serve as a decorative conversation piece.

 

·        Duration of course. 2 to 3 hours per session for 4 to 8 weeks, as necessary.

 

·        Cost of materials beyond $10 fee. Cost to be determined.
